The honest framing up front: Chalk's devices and help desk modules ship today, but they are young. Snipe-IT's asset tracking has been in production for over a decade, and that maturity is real. What Chalk offers in exchange is scope — a roster-aware inventory across ChromeOS, Windows, and iPad, a help desk, an identity provider, and SIS sync in one binary — instead of asset tracking alone.

Who this device belongs to
Snipe-IT gives every asset a user field you populate yourself — usually from a CSV someone exports each August. Chalk pulls students, staff, schools, and enrollments from your SIS over OneRoster 1.1, so the roster is already there before you check in the first Chromebook. Assigning a device means picking a real student, not typing a name.

Why they're calling about it
Snipe-IT has no ticketing, so the help desk lives somewhere else — a shared inbox, a general-purpose service desk, a spreadsheet — and the two never see each other. Chalk's help desk is the same system as the inventory: a ticket already knows the student, their school, and every device assigned to them.

What changed when the student did
Transfers, withdrawals, and grade rollover are the whole rhythm of a school year, and an asset tracker with a text field cannot see any of them. Because Chalk's device records point at real roster identities, a transfer moves the device with the student and a withdrawal surfaces the device as outstanding.

The two ladders do not meter the same thing, and the difference favors Snipe-IT. Chalk prices by device count. Snipe-IT prices by hosting tier, with unlimited assets at every one — so Basic Hosting at $399.99 / yr [Snipe-IT pricing page, verified Jul 2026] covers a fleet of any size. That single figure is lower than every rung on Chalk's ladder, at every fleet size. If asset tracking is the entire job and cost per asset is the deciding axis, Snipe-IT wins, and we would rather say so here than have you find it yourself.

Is Snipe-IT a bad product?
No, and we would rather you hear that from us than discover we were shading it. Snipe-IT is a well-built, well-liked, genuinely open-source asset tracker with a decade of production use behind it. If asset tracking is the whole of the job, it does that job. The reason to look at Chalk is scope: Snipe-IT has no help desk, no SIS connectors, and no way to know that asset CHR-4417 belongs to a 4th grader at Lincoln Elementary who transferred in last month.
Which one is actually cheaper?
It depends on your fleet, and for the smallest districts the answer is Snipe-IT. Snipe-IT Basic Hosting is $399.99 a year for unlimited assets; Chalk's entry tier is $499 a year for up to 1,000 devices. If the only thing you are buying is asset tracking and price per asset is the deciding axis, Snipe-IT wins outright and we are not going to pretend otherwise. The comparison changes when you count what you would otherwise buy separately — a help desk and a roster integration — because those are included in the Chalk number and are not available at any Snipe-IT tier.
Are Chalk's devices and help desk modules actually available now?
Yes. Device tracking (ChromeOS from Google Admin, Windows from Intune, iPads from Jamf), the circulation desk, repairs and fees, barcode/QR audit tooling, and the full help desk all ship in self-hosted Chalk today, alongside roster sync, the SAML 2.0 identity provider, Google/AD/Entra provisioning, and the OneRoster 1.1 API. They are newer than Snipe-IT's decade of production history — that is the honest trade — and the newest connectors (Intune, Jamf, Entra) have been validated against mocked APIs, with real-tenant hardening still ahead.
Can I run Snipe-IT and Chalk side by side?
