Where Chalk pulls ahead
- Chalk is AGPL open source and self-hostable as a single binary, with no per-seat and no per-student fee. Incident IQ has no self-host path at any price, so a district that wants its own data on its own server has no version of iiQ to run.
- Chalk is itself an identity provider — SAML and OIDC out, a student and staff portal, and QR badge sign-in — so it can replace a separate SSO product rather than only integrating with one. No K-12 asset vendor, iiQ included, does identity outward.
- Chalk serves a full OneRoster 1.1 API, which means other district systems can pull roster data from Chalk. iiQ consumes rostering; it does not publish it.
- Chalk's write-back to Google is a diff-preview-and-approve change set: you see every OU move, disable, deprovision, and annotated-field edit before it executes, with typed confirmation on destructive actions. iiQ reads from MDM but does not offer a reviewed write-back workflow.

Common questions
Can I self-host Incident IQ?
No. Incident IQ is a hosted SaaS product with no on-premises or self-hosted option published. If running the software on district-controlled infrastructure is a requirement, iiQ cannot meet it. Chalk is AGPL-licensed and installs as a single binary you run yourself, or you can use Chalk's hosted version if you would rather not operate it.
How much does Incident IQ cost?
Incident IQ does not publish prices. Its pricing page says pricing is aligned to student enrollment with no additional charge for users, requests, or assets, and directs every buyer to schedule a demo for a quote. Cost relative to value for smaller districts is one of the most common criticisms in public reviews.
Does Incident IQ track warranties?
Yes, and it is one of the better implementations in the category — warranty status appears on the asset record and inside tickets, and claims can be filed through hardware partners. Chalk also tracks warranty on the device, in the ticket, and in its AUE runway report, but Chalk does not broker claims with a reseller.
Does Incident IQ collect device fees and fines online?
Not natively. iiQ integrates third-party processors such as InTouch, MySchoolBucks, Square, Stripe, and Vanco to take payment. Chalk deliberately does not process payments either — it assesses fees, tracks balances, and notifies families, but never touches card data, so the asset system stays out of your PCI scope.
Does Incident IQ handle rostering and SSO?
iiQ has the strongest SIS connector breadth among the K-12 asset vendors and pulls roster data in. It is not an identity provider and does not serve a OneRoster API. Chalk syncs from PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, Skyward, and OneRoster CSV or API, imports from Clever and ClassLink, serves a full OneRoster 1.1 API to other systems, and acts as your SAML and OIDC identity provider.
Incident IQ does facilities and HR too — does Chalk?
No, and that is a real difference. iiQ sells facilities work orders with preventive maintenance, event and rental management with invoicing, and HR service delivery. Chalk is deliberately scoped to IT: devices, help desk, and identity. If consolidating facilities and HR onto the same platform is a district priority, iiQ covers ground Chalk does not.
