Annual · billed on a PO

Pricing

Asset-tracker money. Plus a help desk. Plus it already knows your students.

Self-hosting Chalk is free forever. Hosting is the product we sell — starting with a free Chromebooks-only tier, then priced by fleet size. Every number below is list price, annual, and invoiced against a purchase order.

Free ways to run Chalk

Two of them, and neither expires. One is limited by where it runs; the other by what it tracks.

Self-hosted

Most complete

Free forever · AGPL-3.0

Run Chalk on your own infrastructure. The complete feature set, with nothing held back behind a license key.

  • Every module, every connector, no caps
  • OneRoster 1.1 push, pull, and REST API
  • SAML / OIDC SSO and your own IDP
  • Google Workspace & Active Directory sync
  • You control your data, your uptime, your release cadence
  • Community support on GitHub

Hosted free

Free Chromebooks only

We run Chalk for you. Free as long as the assets you track are Chromebooks — the limit is asset breadth, not volume. Device tracking ships today in self-hosted Chalk; the hosted rollout is finishing now. Sign up and it turns on for your district the moment it lands — your roster and console work from day one.

  • Chromebook tracking, populated from Google Admin
  • Unlimited Chromebooks
  • Unlimited admin accounts
  • SIS connection included — your roster populates the inventory
  • No operation caps, no throttling
  • No data redaction — you see everything
  • Managed updates and monitoring
  • Other asset types require a paid tier

The SIS connection that populates your inventory is included, exactly as it is on the paid device tier. What the free tier does not include is Chalk serving rostering, the OneRoster API, SSO, or Workspace/AD provisioning outward to your other systems — that is Full stack.

Create a district

Hosted, paid

Priced by fleet size

Device count is the only meter. No per-student fees, no per-seat licensing, no per-API-call billing, and no charge for admin accounts.

Hosted — Devices + Helpdesk

Track every asset type, not just Chromebooks, with a help desk attached to the same roster.

Hosted — Devices + Helpdesk annual list price by fleet size
Fleet size Per year
Up to 1,000 devices $499
Up to 5,000 devices $999
Up to 20,000 devices $2,499
20,000+ devices / ESC $4,999
  • All asset types — laptops, iPads, projectors, hotspots, carts
  • Help desk with SIS-aware ticket routing
  • Devices and tickets linked to real students and schools
  • SIS connection included — your roster populates the inventory
  • Managed hosting, updates, and monitoring
  • Email support during business hours

The SIS connection that populates your device and ticket data is included here. Full stack is what you add when you also want Chalk to serve rostering, SSO, and Workspace/AD provisioning to the rest of your district.

Frequently asked

Is Chalk really free?

Hosting is the paid product. Running Chalk yourself is free forever under AGPL-3.0, with the complete feature set and no crippleware — download the binary and go. We also run a no-cost tier for you, limited to Chromebooks as an asset type; within that limit it has unlimited devices, unlimited admins, no operation caps, and no data redaction.

What does hosted Chalk cost?

Hosted Devices + Helpdesk is $499/year up to 1,000 devices, $999 up to 5,000, $2,499 up to 20,000, and $4,999 above that or for an ESC. Adding roster sync, the SAML IdP, and Workspace/AD provisioning makes it $1,499, $2,999, and $5,999 at the same three fleet sizes. All prices are annual, billed on a purchase order.

How do I actually buy it?

Request a quote and we invoice you annually against a purchase order. There is no credit-card checkout and no self-serve upgrade path — district procurement runs on POs, so we do too.

How does Chalk compare to Snipe-IT?

Snipe-IT is a good asset tracker, and like Chalk it is free to self-host. It has no help desk, no SIS connectors, and no idea who your students are. Chalk includes all three in one annual number in the same range — but to be straight about it, Snipe-IT's entry hosting tier ($399.99 / yr, community support only) covers a fleet of any size and is lower than every Chalk rung above. If asset tracking is the entire job and cost per asset is the deciding axis, Snipe-IT is cheaper. The full side-by-side comparison lays out both sides.

What is the difference between hosted and self-hosted?

The software is the same. Hosted means we run it, patch it, back it up, and monitor it. Self-hosted means you do — using the AGPL-3.0 release on your own servers, at no cost, with community support on GitHub.
