One to One Plus vs Snipe-IT

Two tools districts shortlist for device tracking and IT operations, compared the way a buying committee actually reads them: what each is, what each does well, and what to check before signing. We build Chalk, a third option in this space — that context is worth knowing as you read, and it is why every claim below carries its basis.

One to One Plus

A K-12 asset management and help desk platform focused on 1:1 device programs, sold as a single subscription with all core features included and an actively developed native mobile app on both iOS and Android.

Pricing: Quote-only. One to One Plus publishes no dollar figures or tiers — a quote form is required — but it does publish its packaging: unlimited users, assets, and support tickets in one subscription, with no add-on modules, usage fees, or surprise charges. Quotes scale with district size and device count, and multi-year and consortium discounts are offered. Note that Capterra separately describes billing as based on number of users, which sits awkwardly against the vendor's own 'unlimited users' framing; verify at quote time.

Where One to One Plus is strong

  • A genuinely strong native mobile app on both iOS and Android, using the phone camera as the scanner with no hardware sled — assignment and collection, full ticket create/update/close, photo and video damage capture, and adding or removing parts with a live availability check. It is actively developed, with Face ID login, in-ticket attachments, and mobile-only ticket forms all shipping within the last year or so.
  • The only product in this comparison with native insurance program management: coverage applied to eligible incidents, claim status and coverage limits tracked, and approved claims offsetting invoice balances. Premiums are a charge type and insurance forms are an e-signature document type.
  • Simple, honest packaging — one subscription, all core features, no module upsells. Among K-12 asset vendors that is genuinely uncommon and removes a whole category of procurement surprise.
  • More than a dozen named integrations covering SIS (Infinite Campus, PowerSchool, Skyward, Ascender), MDM (Google Admin, Microsoft Intune, Mosyle, Jamf Pro, PDQ Deploy), identity (Active Directory plus Google and Microsoft SSO), and payments (MySchoolBucks, Rycor).
  • Purpose-built end-of-year tooling: bulk turn-in for large-scale collection, cart, room, and inventory-area location granularity, and building-level audit reconciliation sheets.
  • Funding source works as both a field and an audit dimension, with Title I and E-Rate named, plus e-signatures for agreements, AUPs, handbooks, and insurance forms, and scheduled report email delivery.

What to check before you buy

  • No purchase order or receiving workflow. The asset record carries passive procurement metadata such as vendor details and purchase dates, but there is no PO object, approval routing, or receive-against-PO step.

  • No parent-facing portal. Families are reached by email — invoices are delivered with view tracking — and when a family pays, that happens on the third-party processor's site rather than in One to One Plus. A staff and student self-service ticket portal does exist; the gap is specifically family-facing.

  • No Clever, ClassLink, or OneRoster support is listed among their published integrations — rostering runs through direct per-vendor SIS connectors instead.

  • Reporting depth is a recurring theme in reviewer feedback despite the product shipping a report builder — buyers appear to judge this area harshly.

Snipe-IT

A mature, genuinely free open-source IT asset manager — it tracks the Chromebook well, but it has no help desk, no roster, and no idea which student is holding it.

Pricing: Self-hosted is free forever under AGPL-3.0 — the vendor states it 'is and always will be free.' Hosted is a published tier ladder (Basic, Small Business, then Dedicated sizes) billed annually or monthly, where the tier buys hosting resources and support rather than fleet headroom: assets and users are unlimited at every tier, including free. No per-seat or per-asset meter anywhere. No education discount is listed — schools pay the same list price as any other customer.

Where Snipe-IT is strong

  • Genuinely free to self-host, AGPL-3.0, with no crippled community edition and no per-asset or per-seat meter at any tier.
  • Publishes every hosted price openly with no 'contact sales' gate — rare enough in K-12 procurement that it deserves saying out loud.
  • Over a decade of production asset tracking behind it, with releases every few weeks and a very large install base.
  • Real identity plumbing for an asset tracker: SAML login, LDAP and Google Secure LDAP user sync, and SCIM auto-provisioning.
  • Genuine asset-lifecycle depth — checkout/checkin with optional acceptance, asset history, audits, custom fields, requestable assets, and three documented depreciation methods.
  • Tracks more than hardware: components, consumables, accessories, and software licenses with expiring-license and expiring-warranty email alerts.

What to check before you buy

  • No help desk or ticketing of any kind. A district running Snipe-IT still buys a service desk somewhere else, and the two systems never see each other.

    Basis: Absent from the vendor's product page; the feature request on the project's issue tracker has been open since 2015, and the documented answer is to integrate an external tool such as osTicket or Zendesk.

  • No SIS or rostering integration — no OneRoster, Clever, ClassLink, PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, or Skyward. Students arrive by CSV, usually exported by hand each August.

    Basis: None of these appear anywhere in Snipe-IT's product page or documentation.

  • No student, guardian, or family concepts. Everyone is a 'user' with a free-text field, so a device cannot know the student's school, grade, or enrollment, and a transfer or withdrawal is invisible to the system.

    Basis: Snipe-IT's data model has users, not students; no guardian or enrollment entity exists in the documentation.

  • It consumes SSO but is not itself an identity provider. It cannot issue SAML or OIDC to your other vendors, and cannot give students a portal login.

    Basis: Snipe-IT's SAML documentation describes it exclusively as a service provider consuming Entra ID, Google Workspace, Okta, OneLogin, or JumpCloud.

  • No purchase orders, and no funding-source or grant tracking. There is a purchase-order-number text field, but nothing that would let you answer which devices ESSER, Title, or E-Rate paid for.

    Basis: Only an order-number field appears in the docs; purchase orders are a long-standing open feature request, and no funding-source concept exists.

  • Consumables and components exist, and maintenance records exist, but they are not linked — you cannot consume a part out of stock against a specific repair.

    Basis: No documented linkage between the consumables and asset-maintenance features.

  • No native mobile app and no camera scanning from the vendor. The web UI is mobile-friendly and works with handheld scanners; every native scanning app is a third-party API client the project explicitly does not support.

    Basis: Vendor documentation states third-party projects are unsupported and to use them at your own risk.

  • No MDM ingest at all — nothing pulls from Google Admin, Intune, or Jamf, and nothing writes back. The vendor confirms there is no network agent and points at the REST API instead.

    Basis: Snipe-IT's FAQ: 'We don't currently provide a network agent, however we do have a robust REST API that can be integrated with agents if you know a little programming.'
