Lansweeper vs Zendesk

Two tools districts shortlist for device tracking and IT operations, compared the way a buying committee actually reads them: what each is, what each does well, and what to check before signing. We build Chalk, a third option in this space — that context is worth knowing as you read, and it is why every claim below carries its basis.

Lansweeper

The strongest network discovery engine in this comparison — it will find every device on your wire, including the ones nobody told it about, and it will not know that any of them belongs to a seventh grader.

Pricing: Quote-and-portal, not a published ladder. Lansweeper meters by licensed asset count: its documentation states that most subscriptions limit the number of assets you can scan, and that scanning of new and existing assets may stop once you hit the limit. Plan changes and asset-coverage increases run through a Self-Service Subscription Portal with live price previews; upgrading to a Pro plan is self-serve, Enterprise is explicitly 'Talk to Sales', and downgrades are not available in the portal at all. The one fixed figure Lansweeper publishes at a retrievable URL is in its own online store: a Lansweeper Classic Helpdesk Agent license at $120.00 per agent per year. No education discount is documented.

Where Lansweeper is strong

  • Genuine network discovery, which almost nothing else in this category has: agentless scanning of Windows over WMI, Linux and macOS over SSH, and printers, switches, routers, firewalls and NAS over SNMP, so the inventory includes devices no one ever entered.
  • A passive traffic sensor that discovers assets from network communications, catching devices that active scanning misses entirely — the closest thing to a real answer for shadow IT and unmanaged OT gear.
  • An IT Agent for Windows, Linux and macOS endpoints that rarely touch the LAN, and Cloud Discovery across Azure, Intune, Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, AWS and GCP — with a reconciliation engine that merges the same device seen through several sources into one asset record instead of three.
  • Vulnerability detection built on CPE correlation and VulnCheck, with CVSS severity and patch status against the software and OS actually in your inventory, alongside hardware and software lifecycle tracking for end-of-sale and end-of-support dates.
  • Deployment packages in Lansweeper Classic — install software, run scripts and make remote changes on Windows machines from the same console that inventoried them.
  • A full built-in help desk in Classic: tickets from the web console, email, API or import, dispatching rules, SLAs, teams, internal notes and a knowledge base.

What to check before you buy

  • Lansweeper is two products with a documented feature gap between them — Lansweeper Platform in the cloud and Lansweeper Classic on-premises — and which capabilities you get depends on which one you deploy.

  • ChromeOS discovery is a Lansweeper Classic capability. In the newer Lansweeper Platform the vendor's comparison table marks Chrome OS as 'Planned (Cloud Discovery)'. For a district whose fleet is Chromebooks, that is the whole fleet sitting on the older product.

  • Even in Classic, ChromeOS scanning is work you do yourself: your license must support Chrome OS scanning, and you build a Google Cloud project, enable the Admin SDK, create a service account and grant it scopes before a single Chromebook appears.

  • The help desk is licensed per agent. Unlimited users can file tickets, but exactly one agent license is included, and every additional technician who answers tickets is a paid seat at $120 per year.

    Basis: Vendor's 'Manage helpdesk agents' documentation plus the listed price in Lansweeper's own online store.

  • That help desk belongs to Classic. The cloud Platform documentation covers no ticketing module of its own — service management appears as connectors to Jira Service Management, ConnectWise, Zendesk and Freshservice, meaning a second vendor.

    Basis: Lansweeper's documentation index places every help-desk article under Classic, and lists ITSM tools as integrations under Platform.

  • The asset meter has teeth: reaching your licensed asset limit can stop scanning of new and existing assets until you delete assets or upgrade.

  • No student, guardian or enrollment concepts, and no SIS or rostering connectors — the identity sources documented are Active Directory, Entra ID, Intune and Microsoft 365. Students arrive by CSV, if at all.

    Basis: Absent from Lansweeper's documentation index, which covers directory and cloud identity sources only.

  • Nothing models the 1:1 program itself: no device agreement, no parent signature, no fee for a cracked screen, no family balance, and no funding-source dimension for ESSER, Title or E-Rate reporting.

    Basis: Absent from the vendor's documented feature set, which is discovery, inventory, risk and deployment.

Zendesk

The best-known customer-service platform in the world, bought by districts that want a polished ticketing front door — with a 500-asset ceiling on its new IT asset module and no idea that your requesters are students.

Pricing: Per-agent, per-month subscriptions billed annually: Support Team at $19 for email ticketing only, Suite Team at $55 once you want a knowledge base or messaging, Suite Professional at $115, and Suite Enterprise quote-only. Copilot is a $50-per-agent-per-month add-on, and the Contact Center and Workforce Engagement bundles are $83 and $50 respectively. Be honest about the K-12 shape of this: a district with six technicians pays for six seats, and end users never appear on the bill, so per-agent help-desk pricing is often genuinely affordable for a school district. Two things do bite. AI is metered separately as 'automated resolutions' — an allowance of 5 to 15 per agent per month depending on tier, capped at 10,000 a year, with an overage rate Zendesk does not publish. And IT asset management is included only from Suite Growth upward, with 500 assets included and more sold separately. No education discount is published.

Where Zendesk is strong

  • The most mature omnichannel help desk on this list by a wide margin — email, live chat and messaging, voice, and social including WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram, all in one agent workspace.
  • Serious AI: AI agents that resolve tickets end to end, Admin Copilot, writing tools, and intelligent triage at the top tier. Chalk has no equivalent and will not pretend otherwise.
  • A very large integration ecosystem — Zendesk's own claim is 1,800+ apps, partners, and integrations — plus a deep, well-documented REST API, webhooks, an apps framework, and mobile SDKs.
  • Knowledge base, help center, SLAs, triggers and automations, skills-based routing, IVR, and prebuilt analytics dashboards, all of it battle-tested at enormous scale.
  • Real education customers, including K-12 districts — Grapevine-Colleyville ISD is a published Zendesk case study — so this is not a tool that has never seen a school.
  • Zendesk has begun shipping native IT asset management with Jamf, Microsoft Intune, and Automox sync, in-ticket asset context, and device actions. It is new, but it is real.

What to check before you buy

  • The IT asset module includes 500 assets, with more purchasable. A 1:1 district counts devices in the thousands or tens of thousands, so the fleet is a metered line item from day one rather than a fixed cost.

    Basis: Zendesk's ITAM page states the capability is 'included in Zendesk Suite plans Growth and above, with the option to purchase the ability to track additional assets beyond 500 included in the plan.'

  • That asset module is also very new. It reached customers through an Early Access Program with phases landing between late 2025 and April 2026, and parts of the admin experience were still labeled EAP at the time of writing.

    Basis: Zendesk's own EAP announcement in its support help center describes the phased rollout; the ITAM marketing page still carries EAP labeling on asset creation.

  • No SIS or rostering integration of any kind — no OneRoster, Clever, ClassLink, PowerSchool, Infinite Campus, or Skyward. Students and staff arrive by directory sync or CSV, not from the system of record.

    Basis: None appear on either Zendesk education page, whose named integrations are Five9, Slack, Zoom, Zoho, and Skilljar. Verified as absent from Zendesk's published education material rather than from an exhaustive crawl of its app directory.

  • No student, guardian, or family concepts. The data model is customers, organizations, and tickets. There is no enrollment, no grade, no guardian relationship, and nothing that notices a mid-year transfer.

    Basis: Absent from Zendesk's product documentation and both education pages; the platform's end-user primitive is the customer record.

  • No 1:1 device custody as a product concept — no check-out to a student with a due date, no overdue workflow, no parent-signed agreement, no loaner pool, no lost or stolen lifecycle, and no damage fees.

    Basis: Absent from the ITAM feature page, which is framed around corporate asset ownership, warranty, service history, and remote device actions.

  • The advertised $19 entry price is email ticketing only. A knowledge base, messaging, and AI agents start at $55 per agent, and the asset module starts a tier above that.

    Basis: Zendesk's published pricing page: Support Team $19 versus Suite Team $55, with ITAM gated to Suite Growth and above.

  • AI is billed on a second axis you cannot forecast from the pricing page. Automated resolutions carry a per-agent monthly allowance and an overage rate that Zendesk describes as more expensive than pre-purchased volume but does not publish.

    Basis: Zendesk's support article on automated resolutions states the allowances per plan, the 10,000-per-year cap, and that overage costs more — without naming a figure.

  • Cloud-only, permanently and on the record, and a service provider for SSO rather than an identity provider. It consumes SAML, OIDC, or JWT from your IdP; it cannot issue identity to your other vendors.

    Basis: Zendesk's help center answers the self-hosting question with 'No. To ensure platform security and integrity, Zendesk only provides products directly through Zendesk servers.' Its SSO documentation describes external authentication only.

The third option: Chalk

If you are weighing Lansweeper against Zendesk, Chalk belongs on the same shortlist.   • Fees are assessed and tracked without touching payment cards, keeping the asset system out of your PCI scope.
